Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is a business collaboration platform for the Web and the Enterprise that enables you to connect and empower people through an integrated set of rich features.

Microsoft SharePoint can get used to host web sites that access shared workspaces, documents and information stores, also host defined applications such as blogs and wikis. It is allowed for all users to manipulate proprietary controls called “web parts” or interact with content pieces such as document libraries and lists.

As per the latest announcement by Microsoft, the upcoming version of SharePoint will be called “Microsoft SharePoint 2010” instead of “Microsoft SharePoint 14″. The announcement had number of other goodies too.

What is SharePoint 2010?

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is a business collaboration platform for the Web and the Enterprise that enables you to connect and empower people through an integrated set of rich features. Whether deployed on-premises or as hosted services, SharePoint 2010 helps you cut costs with a unified infrastructure while allowing you to respond rapidly to your business needs

Featured Highlights:

New User Interface including the new Ribbon

Rich Theming

Silver light Web Part

Web Edit

SharePoint Designer

Visio Services

Multiple Browser Support

SharePoint Workspace

Business Connectivity Services (the evolution of the Business Data Catalog)

Rich Media Support

With Microsoft SharePoint, Inline editing for list items will be possible; there will be no need to hit the datasheet view. BDC will be a two way road: with SP2010 it may be possible to insert data from BDC. SharePoint 2010 will be “targeting standards based browsers (XHTML 1.0 compliant) including Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.x. running on Windows Operating Systems, it will not support IE 6.0. With similar architecture as MOSS 2007, the strain will be on integrating the advanced UI features, watch out for office like ribbon control, ajaxed controls etc. Content Management Interoperability Services will allow SharePoint 2010 to communicate with other CMS.
